Sunday 10 July. Cawsands to Fowey. 20 nm

Overnight the wind had shifted to the east. Unfortunately this meant an onshore wind, and although not strong it was enough to kick up an uncomfortable sea, with the boats bucking on their anchors. So we got up and left 9ish. It also meant the tides are with us for most of our journey west. Sad to leave and wondering when we’ll be here again …..🤔. But the suns shining and the sea is flat . I had packed swimsuits and bikinis 👙 but thought at the time that they probably wouldn’t get worn! Today is very very hot in the rest of the country but on the sea it’s just lovely with the ability to find a bit of breeze provided by the forward motion of the boat and shade provided by the mainsail. I found a good cool spot when not on watch, sitting on the dinghy in the shade. We even put the cruising chute up ! It was a lovely trip and we were able to enjoy the beautiful coastline as we weren’t far off land. We arrived at Fowey entrance about 1400 and although we’ve been before, it is a magical view down the long estuary with sides flanked with white houses and all sorts of jumbled buildings, and colourful boats all along the waters edge. We radioed to get instructions for picking up a visitor mooring. Blue ones over in the right arm of the estuary. I could see they didn’t have pick ups, so rigged the line and got my yellow thing ready. We picked our buoy. The first attempt.., the end dropped off when I stuck it through the hoop, so we had to go round again.. and this time it worked.. hurrah!all sorted and tied on. Just then a chap appeared from a neighboring boat in their dinghy to tell us that we were too big for that mooring and when we swung on the tide we might make contact….. ☹️ so we dropped that mooring and went and did it all again far away from him! Once settled it was very peaceful and we never actually swung far at all, even when the tide changed. Guess the breeze was enough. we went on shore just to have a little wander and a beer at the Galleon overlooking the harbour. It was lovely to sit in the cool shade!

What I learned today…… the seagulls in Fowey are very assertive!
