Thursday 17 June . Holy Loch to Troon 47 nm

Woke to blue sky and a bright shiny thing in the sky! Very welcome after all the gloom we’ve been having up here. As we had a long way home we set off early about 8 ish after a cup of tea. Julian cooked bacon and egg baps on the way as we sailed gently out of the protection of Holy Loch. There’s something really special about the peace of a Scottish Loch in the quiet of a sunny morning. J was very pleased when he got the anchor up as it was covered in thick gooey mud…. meaning we had indeed found an anchorage with good holding. Always more reassuring than when it comes up and you realise you were blissfully unaware you’ve been attached to a lump of seaweed overnight.

The sun continued to shine but a chilly wind got up to a force 2-3 . Clouds skudded across the sky and amassed over the mountains out to the west… presumably the ones around Loch Lomond. The wind was sill a bit southerly but due to go round to the west later. This meant tacking for most of the way back until we were out in the firth and hung a left towards Troon. It was a really fantastic days sailing but quite tiring as tacking is physically demanding… for me anyway! I cooked chicken curry with onions, peppers and peas, which we ate out in the cockpit enjoying the sunset.

What I learned today….. how to (try to) tack the headsail without the sheets getting stuck on the dinghy wheels or any other sticky out but!
