Overnight the wind had shifted to the east. Unfortunately this meant an onshore wind, and although not strong it was enough to kick up an uncomfortable sea, with the boats bucking on their anchors. So we got up and left 9ish. It also meant the tides are with us for most of our journey west.Continue reading “Sunday 10 July. Cawsands to Fowey. 20 nm”

Saturday 9 July. Day in Cawsands
Woke up to bright sunshine. Julian got up quite early to go ashore in the dinghy before the crowds were about. The scene was lovely, early morning sun shining on the pretty village houses with the distinctive clock tower in the middle. It really is a beautiful spot. The wind was still offshore do JulianContinue reading “Saturday 9 July. Day in Cawsands”
Friday 8 July. Plymouth QAB to Cawsands bay. 7 nm
We started the day by welcoming the Hemisphere rigging guys. Even though we couldn’t get into Plymouth Yacht Haven, they were very flexible and happy to rib over to QAB. They did a complete check to make sure the rigging was perfectly tuned and took our main halyard away to repair it. They voomed upContinue reading “Friday 8 July. Plymouth QAB to Cawsands bay. 7 nm”
Thursday 7 July. Starehole bay to Plymouth. 23 nm
Another nice morning. There was not much wind so we motor sailed most of the way. No matter, the sky was blue and it was peaceful looking at the coastal scenery . As we approached the turning into Plymouth entrance, the wind picked up so we were able to sail into the sound and onContinue reading “Thursday 7 July. Starehole bay to Plymouth. 23 nm”
Wednesday 6 July. Exmouth to Starehole bay, Salcombe. 40 nm
We got Steve to open the bridge once we had enough water underneath us and slipped out of the cocoon like marina at about 0930. It helped a lot having got the “plot” in on the plotter, we could just follow it out. Ie drive the boat along the same line. The sea was flatContinue reading “Wednesday 6 July. Tuesday 5 July. Day in Exmouth.
No lie in as we had to be ready for 0800 and the HM Steve, to open the bridge. We’d been to have a look at the marina which is packed with motor boats and we were a little worried about where there was for us to go! The pontoon where we overnighted is strictlyContinue reading “Tuesday 5 July. Day in Exmouth.”
Monday 4 July. Weymouth to Exmouth. 58 nm
Today’s journey takes us out round Portland bill so getting the tides right is critical. There are several areas around the UK where tidal races are created which can be dangerous and PB is one of those ☹️. Tom Cunliffe pilot quote “ Quite substantial vessels drawn into it have been to disappear without traceContinue reading “Monday 4 July. Weymouth to Exmouth. 58 nm”
Sunday 3 July. Poole to Weymouth. 37 nm
Sunday. A busy day in Poole harbour. Boats going all over the place. We left about 1130 after having bought a Sunday paper, filled up with water, made the cheese and ham rolls ….etc. The wind was thankfully light for once, weather warm and sunny. We sailed out of the harbour with full main. TheContinue reading “Sunday 3 July. Poole to Weymouth. 37 nm”
Saturday 2 July. Day in Poole
We had decided to stay two nights and do a bit of catching up but also exploring. It seems it’s wise to book weekend berths in this vicinity, so we’d been advised by the marina that if we didn’t book the two nights we may be disappointed…. so we did. Julian got up quite earlyContinue reading “Saturday 2 July. Day in Poole”
Friday 1 July. Studland bay to Poole town quay marina. 6 nm.
Another short hop today. Julian’s cousin lives in Poole so we had made a plan to meet them lunchtime ish. Entering Poole harbour via the Swash Channel…. it was so close there wasn’t much point in putting any sails up. Here you have to go up the left hand side of the channel which feelsContinue reading “Friday 1 July. Studland bay to Poole town quay marina. 6 nm.”
