Saturday 27 August. Lochranza to Scalpsie bay , Bute. 10 nm.

It couldn’t have been a more peaceful night, or a more perfect morning. The sky was bright blue without a cloud… at least to begin with. The sun was shining and the water was like a mill pond. Pretty unusual for this area! There is purple heather and bright green bracken covered hills, together with white cottages and a ruined castle at the head of the Loch. It is the most idyllic scene, and although We’ve been here before I’ve never seen it quite like this. It feels like a coming home gift. We Got the dinghy off and Alice and I went for a row. It’s so quiet. The clouds are building a bit from the north, but there’s hardly any wind. The water’s clear and drifting around you can see the bottom. Lots of lion mane jelly fish too…. so Julian definitely won’t be doing any swimming after getting stung by one last year☹️. We got some pictures of the boat ( more! ) but it was a particularly nice setting! We set off after breakfast and turned right out of the Loch. There’s no wind to speak of so we just motored and enjoyed the beautiful scenery in the warm sun. I had thought the shorts had gone away for good a couple of days ago , so this is a real treat. 😎 we headed across Bute Sound, passing the entrance to Loch Fyne on our left. We’d identified a new anchorage we’d not been to before which should be good in the forecast wind direction. True to form the wind was actually coming from the south, but since it was so light and not destined to increase, we just anchored pointing outwards. It was good to be back in the land of Antares charts! There were 3 other boats anchored and another joined later. A big open bay and a wide beach, with a few people enjoying the late summer sun. A few kayaks and SUPs making the most of the calm water. We even saw an open topped double decker going along…. on a hidden road….seeming incongruous in such a remote and wild setting. It was a special evening watching seabirds- oystercatchers and curlews amongst others- seals, and the world go by generally. I made the Manx kippers into delicious pate👍 for supper!

What I learned today…. never thought I liked kippers but in a pate… really very nice.! Recipe from the Peel smokery… but I added more creme fraiche than it says 😋
