Another beautiful day dawns. After breakfast, a shower in the “barge” facilities. So nice not to have to walk miles. I did take the rubbish which was when I found out they’re were no bins there. There was a bin with a notice on it , saying “ This is NOT a bin” ; so I had to take it all into the shower. Then Stani and I went to Tesco’s whilst J cleaned the boat. We also had a mission to identify eating/ drinking venues for later, en route. Tesco’s was easy to get to and we did our bit of shopping after finding the recommended pub for later. We took a round trip back to the marina and it seems like Dun Laoghaire is a lovely buzzing place. full of sunshine today. My plan for the afternoon activities was a walk out along East Pier , and on the way; sussing our restaurants for later. Most seem to be closed on a Monday and Tuesday ☹️We were meeting a colleague of Stan and Julian for supper so as he’s local, we’re following his recommendation. The pier walk takes you right out along the huge breakwater to the portside lighthouse . On the way there is an ornate looking bandstand painted sky blue and white. And to the side some white cast iron pillars, which obviously once supported a roof of some sort? Maybe glass? Sad it hasn’t been replaced. You can just imagine the ladies in their long skirts and bonnets promenading. At the end there is the light house building which dates back to napoleonic days. And used to be full of weapons etc. Now it just has an ice cream stall. 🍦 Walking back along the pier we were watching all the dinghys in the bay, loads of different sailing schools and fleets of boats. It’s a huge flat protected lake really , ideal for Kids to have fun. Next stop was the National Maritime museum of Ireland which is housed in a beautiful old church. It’s obviously been cleaned and “done up” very tastefully both inside and out. All the brass plaques are gleaming and polished, with the sun streaming through the intricate stained glass windows. It was a good museum…. interesting, well laid out content and not too overwhelming. One of the most interesting stories I’ve put in the photos … about “the Great Eastern”, and Captain Robert Halpin…. such amazing pioneers of their day, and with none of the modern technology we now take for granted on the sea. We went back to the boat before meeting Matt for a beer/ Guinness at McKennas. Afterwards we had a fantastic meal, sitting outside in the warm balmy atmosphere…. amazing! Like being abroad! Thanks Matt for joining us, it was a great evening 😊!
What I learned today….. that the flagpole in front of Liverpool football club at Anfield, is in fact one of the masts from the boat in my story…, “The Great Eastern” !
