Thursday 21 July. Old Grimsby sound to St Marys. 2.5 nm

This morning it was like a mill pond. Moving around in Scilly depends very much on the timing of high water, unless you want to go the long way… round the outside. Today our destination was St Mary’s, the biggest of the Scilly isles. We left our mooring about 1030, and went south . I’ve put a picture of the chart on for anyone interested. The yellow areas dry out towards low water. Work out high water, work out depths to be traversed etc etc . The actual depth went down to 4 m . We Need 2m to float so no problem! We had no idea how busy it would be at St Marys or whether we would find a free mooring in the pool. However it was fine! We hooked ourselves to a nice yellow 12 m buoy and relaxed. Shortly after our arrival “ Scillonian 3” came into the quay. It’s a very busy place. The Scillonian is the passenger ferry from Penzance which brings the majority of holiday makers here. Once sorted, we got in the dinghy and made for the quay where there’s a dedicated E shaped pontoon for dinghies made it of those floating plastic blocks. We found the Harbour office, paid our dues and got the leaflet. We then filled our water containers ……From a very awkward tap…..as we’re keen to keep the tanks topped up, knowing that we won’t be able to hose water in, until we get to Ireland. We did have a shopping list but decided to have wander before doing the coop thing. A really busy quay and a quaint seafront village. One can imagine it before the advent of tourism, but it’s not spoiled. The actual village/ town is called Huw Town and the Island St Mary’s. Walk 100 m south directly on the other side of the town and you overlook the bay of Port Cressa. It looked very peaceful. About 20 boats anchored in there, including our friend Tim. After exploring we made our way back to the coop. That wasn’t a pleasant experience! Loads of people crowded into a tiny supermarket ☹️…. battling for the last broccoli 🥦. Once escaped from there we had a stop at “the Atlantic “, 🍻before returning with shopping and water. There does seem to be s bit of a swell in here but it’s gentle and quite soporific! We slept well!

What I learned today…. Scilly is definitely going up in my estimation!
