J got up early to go to the coop for a paper, some croissants and some Cornish pasties for our lunch on passage. I went down the pontoon to say bye to Charlie and Don who we’d met yesterday… they happen to be the next door neighbors of our great friends Debbie and Bruce from Hythe. 🤗 They are also going to Scilly today. We set off in the sunshine with a SE wind towards Lands End . We left at 1000 in order to be at the Runnel Stone with the tide taking us round And west . We passed Mouse hole ( Mowzull) and the infamous old Penlee lifeboat station on the way. We had 15 to 20 knots all the way which made it a quick passage, with a following sea once going west.
Quite big waves and you could tell we were off shore again. But the sun shone although there was a haziness about it, and soon we could make out Scilly in the distance. We listened to radio 5 live and the 150 th open golf championship from “ the old course at St Andrews “ where Rory McIlroy appeared to be doing well. We gybed a couple of times and eventually took the sails down before heading into our chosen anchorage on the North coast of St Martins island. Named “Bread and cheese cove” ! Supposed to be a delightful anchorage and usually deserted. Well it was! It was on the other side of a headland with a striking red and white striped column on it. No light, but very visible in daylight. There was a bit of a swell but nothing to worry about. A beautiful white sandy beach and the sound of sea birds. We had the rest of our fish for supper and thought about the islands and how far we had come, from the Orkneys to the Scillies…….
What I learned today ……identified my first juvenile gannet! Must have seen them before but not logged it. Distinctive gannet shape and flight just dark in colour.
