A little overcast today but very warm still. We dinghied over to the little harbour mid morning to do some shopping, some exploring, and to book somewhere for an evening meal tonight. I’d tried to book online at the Victory inn, but some hitch with verification messages or whatever, so needed to check we had actually booked….. which in fact we hadn’t! Lovely old pub, you can imagine in the days when StMawes was just a fishing village. Now it is ( still lovely no less) but a seaside playground for people who can afford it. We had to pay £5.00 to leave our dinghy on the pontoon, but fair enough… we didn’t have to pay for the anchorage. Once we’d checked we’d booked our evening meal, we went for a walk westward, out to Castle point to have a look at the view from St Mawes castle, overlooking the Fal estuary. Couple of ice creams and a walk back to the Rising Sun for some liquid refreshment. Fortunately the skies are still a little cloudy which is just about keeping the temperature bearable. Once we’d been to the coop and realised that all the fresh stuff gets sold out about 0900!, we returned to the boat and unloaded our purchases. Getting hotter and hotter, we got back in the dinghy and went for a little explore up stream. We took the petrol can with us just in case! It’s a really beautiful estuary… full of boats in moorings until you get a way up. On the south side it’s wooded down to the water, with rolling arable field above. I noticed how some had already been harvested and there were round bails in the fields. How the summer is marching on. An amazing almost chateau like residence looked like it could be the setting for a period drama….. I’ll look it up! On the north side, the properties are also amazing and must be worth a fortune. A des res being built on the waters edge must be costing millions. Back to the boat and another swim… before going ashore at 1830 for our meal out. On the way we had a chat with a neighboring anchored boat, about the possibility that our anchor may be exactly under their boat. Nobody’s fault, but that can happen when boats swing around in the tide and in the wind. Here the boats are quite often pointed in different directions. Anyway we just wanted to check when they were leaving , in case it becomes an issue. Our meal out was delightful. We sat upstairs and looked out across a little balcony, to the harbour. St Mawes really is very lovely and we will be sad to leave tomorrow. Back in the boat.. we saw the moon rise above the hills and then a real treat happened at 10 pm that we weren’t expecting! A fantastic firework display from a boat out in the harbour! It went on for a good 20 minutes. the sky was lit up, and the sounds echoed around the town like canon fire. Truly spectacular!
What I learned today…. that St Mawes has a tradition of having a firework display every year🤗 And that the grand building is Place manor! Thanks Richard!
