Thursday 9 June. Whitby. Several miles on a bus.

First thing was admin jobs. Various communications and birthday cards to write. Keeping up with stuff on the home front has its own challenges when away for 5 months. At 11 am we set off to catch our open topped bus round the sights and roads of Whitby. In our experience these tourist buses are invariably worth doing. It is such a pleasure for us to just travel without any effort involved.! And the commentary usually informative. In fact that’s where I got my …. WILT from . We got off for 40 minutes at the ruined abbey and had s look around at Mary’s church. Since it cost a lot more to go into the Abbey, we decided to go to to the Whitby brewery Instead and used our 50 p token to get a pint of Abbey blonde which we shared, before getting back on the bus. Once we had completed the hour long tour, I went into the old bit of Whitby just marvelling at all the people in the tiny cobbled streets. Don’t think I’ve seen so many people in one place since leaving Shrewsbury. I bought some cards and wrapping paper. I wanted to go to the museum Lorna but only found the captain cook one and the museum of Jet. 🤔 Whitby is famous for its Jet ( black gemstone) and also for a Goth festival in the summer. Not sure if the two are connected? There is also a Dracula connection.

Back in the boat I did some cooking, for tonight and for tomorrow’s overnight trip to Lowestoft. Cut up the fruit cake and once all those jobs done had a nice shower. Had a zoom call to my girlfriends at home which is always lovely and Tim our friend and extra crew arrived about 1930, so we chatted over a drink and ate chicken curry up in the still warm cockpit. By the time I will write this again…. we’ll be in Lowestoft !

What I learned today…… that Jet is the result of the fossilised remains of monkey puzzle trees. Who’d have thunk it!
