The first hour of today’s trip was not great. The anchorage wasn’t too bad until the wind changed to a more northerly direction, bringing the North Sea swell in. Arose at 0400 hrs It was raining, pretty gloomy and Angelique going up and down like a bucking bronco. There was a line in the sky on the horizon where the dawn was breaking meeting with the glow in the west from the previous sunset. We got the anchor up and the boat immediately turned towards the mouth of the tunnel like entrance into Eyemouth harbour. Once inside life was transformed into a peaceful quiet river setting. We knew where we were meant to go having spoken to the HM previously. Thankful that no one was on the pontoon we slid alongside and tied up. The incongruity of it all was magical. On the opposite side a small Italian bistro cafe had twinkly lights on, and a blackbird was singing nearby. I went back to bed and the town clock chimed 5 times. Both tired we slept quite late. After which we found where the harbour office and the facilities were. All very lovely and new but quite a walk. The harbour is not a marina. Basically a truly working fishing harbour but one that welcomes yachts. It’s obviously a thriving town and also holiday destination. It is really delightful. We went for a wander into the little town which surrounds the harbour. The harbour is long and thin and joins the river Eye with the sea. J managed to straight away get gaz from the chandlery and at the cheapest price we’ve seen for years! There is lots of fresh fish around to buy and at much cheaper price than in the supermarket. They’re redeveloping the whole one side of the harbour where the old fish market was so there’s obviously some money around. It is altogether a delightful bustling little place … holiday makers and working people seemingly enjoying what each brings. A colourful place which we will remember as one of the highlights of our journey so far.
What I learned today….. all about the fisherman William Spears who led a peaceful revolt in the 1840 s against taxes on fishermen. And all about the Eyemouth herring queen festival!
