Sunday 22 May. Wick

Today was a lot brighter and less wet! After a wonderful cooked breakfast for a treat it was to be a doing jobs day. Laundry, shopping, various phone calls, cleaning the boat, etc etc. we had established that not much opens in Wick on a Sunday, and therefore was with glee that I discovered that there was a 24 hour 7 day a week, coin operated self service laundrette… within walking distance . Surprisingly the harbour master said he wasn’t sure because he’d never been asked about laundry before 🤔. I left J cleaning Angelique whist I went off to the find Wick laundry. Obviously a locals laundrette so there were absolutely no instructions, but I had taken lots of coins so no problem!Fortunately there were friendly folk on hand and I put the washing on for £5.50 . While waiting I took advantage of “the Scran van” and had a cup of tea sitting under a rather incongruous Hawaiian looking umbrella. Then of course once done it had to be dried….. no driers free, so I had to wait until one was. All very time consuming. Julian had had time to clean the whole boat and do the phone calls , but all had gone well, except he’d managed to fill one of his wellies with water whilst doing so. Next job was shopping so off to the coop we went, list in hand. With our trolley and rucksacks. On the way we read the various plaques telling us all about Wick harbour and Pulteneytown, was at one time the biggest herring port in the world. I photographed some of the plaques as it’s an interesting history. Walking around you could see how wealthy the town must have been in the 1800’s, with all sorts of statues and memorials to people and lists of important people who had been there. One interesting feature was there were commemorative flag stones in the pavements depicting long gone shops and local businesses…… and also the signature of L.S Lowry and some of his figures.. not sure why. Or what the connection may be. Maybe you might know Christine or Stan? Anyway after eventually finding the co op; we trundled our trolley back avoiding the many “trolley hazards “ that go unnoticed in normal life. Kerbs, cobbles, potholes, uneven flagstones and of course 🐕 💩😩.

The showers are brilliant here so took full advantage and all of us now feel clean again! As we’re getting up early tomorrow ( 0530) set off, it’s a curry on board and early night.

What Julian learned today…… not to wash one’s sock whilst still on foot.

  1. Sue, interesting re Lowry reference he painted up there regularly and one of his famous paintings is ‘steps at Wick’ very much like all his other paintings!
