Our last holiday day here! And a very soggy one! We returned our hire car to Kirkwall via a look at the marina there. Always easier coming into a marina if you’re familiar with its layout. Kirkwall is beautiful with the huge red stone cathedral at its centre. As it was so wet we had a brief look in some shops selling lovely jewellery and local art. Then to get out of the rain we went to the cathedral visitor centre to watch a film about the history of the Orkneys and poor old St Magnus who ended up with an axe in his head. Very interesting. After a coffee and cake nearby we wandered back to the bus station . In the afternoon Julian went to look at the museum in Stromness and also found the well where Erebus and Terror took on water , prior to setting off for the Quest of the Northwest passage between the arctic and Canada . It’s a story too long for here but well worth reading about. I bought a ( very expensive) guaranteed resistant to UV light Orkney flag to go with our Scottish one, that we can fly whilst in these waters. The rest of the day was spent getting ready to go tomorrow. We also said farewell to our neighbors , 2 french youngsters who set off for Bergen in Norway ( non stop) in their little boat, on their way to the Lofoten islands. Hoping the weather will be more cheery tomorrow!
What I learned today…….. always put the rope the right way round on the cleat so it doesn’t rub on the wood ☹️
