Tuesday 10 May . Stromness

Today was largely spent doing laundry. The toilets showers and laundry are in the ferry terminal building and although there is a code to get in; you can just get in through the door to the ticket office. Since there was only one washing machine and one tumble drier, this meant that they were continually in use and then not returned to when laundry done ! All very time consuming and in the end I walked up and down to the ferry terminal about 7 times before returning with a bag load of clean dry laundry. ☹️ in the afternoon We went I to investigate Stromness. An old town with an immense maritime history. We meandered along the one Main Street with a cobbled centre. A few shops, s few cars and a few people. To the seaward side, all the houses have old slipways going into the sea. Evidence of a bygone time and a bygone way of life . I went to the museum which was really interesting……. full of stuff. Dr John Rae was born here, famous doctor of early arctic exploration. Lot about him and his prototype for the modern inflatable dinghy. Also the Hudson Bay company and all the world war connections. After being thoroughly impressed by stories of intrepid people, I wandered back to Angelique. Julian was filling up our fuel tank from the spare can and then refilled that.

At about 7 pm as he had said, Allan our friend set off into the blustery evening in his lovely boat …… planning to sail overnight to the Shetlands, before continuing to the Faroes. Strong winds are forecast and he thought he had a window of opportunity. During the evening as it got dark and windy, we kept tracking to make sure he was making good progress. Tomorrow we’re hiring a car and being tourists which will be so fun!

What I learned today…….. how full of brave intrepid people this world is…. even now.
