Wednesday 28 July. Gigha round Mull of Kintyre to Carradale bay 46 no

My third rounding of the Mull! We set of around 0830. The wind was variable strength but nothing scary. The direction enabled us to have the chute up a bit , which always occupies a large amount of time sorting it out, getting it up and then a few minutes later taking it down because a) the wind has dropped b) the wind is building and can’t risk Not being able to get it down at all c) the wind has changed direction.

The visibility was good and it was a pleasant trip. There were a number of other boats in the same passage as us ……it’s always nice not to be be completely alone! We hadn’t got a definite destination plan due to not knowing exactly where the wind would end up on the “other” side. Sanda would have been nice but wind direction not great and we decided to push on round as there was quite a strong breeze forecast for later. Instead of going into Campbeltown as most others appeared to be going there, we went further up Kilbranan sound and anchored in Caradale bay. It’s a wide open bay which is good if the winds not from the south and at least your anchoring in sand! It didn’t feel particularly protected and the wind was quite strong but we had a peaceful enough night and in the morning found we had been joined by another big Cornish crabber type boat. Sue x
