Monday 26 July Oronsay to port Ellen 28 nm

A grey, sultry, gloomy morning. Visibility pretty poor although J said it was worse an hour ago. The night had been okay but a noticeable swell had set in presumably with the tide changing . Our plan was to head for the Ardmore islands off Islay maybe for lunch and then onto port Ellen, or possibly to stay overnight in the anchorage. We set off after breakfast but with very little wind to blow away the murk or fill the sails…. yet again we were motoring . We entered the sound of Islay about right to catch the last two hours of south going tide. At one time we were up to 10 knots ! It’s an interesting place but we couldn’t get the wonderful views of the paps on Jura as they were lost in the cloud! However we did see all the famous malt whisky distilleries along the shore. We were through in no time and popped out the other side to a small amount of wind. We took the opportunity to put up the cruising chute .. and for a short while it worked well… until the wind dropped again! The next bit of the day will be was not as enjoyable as it should have been. Although bobs charts of the anchorage are very accurate, we managed to somehow land on one of the submerged rocks on the entrance to the anchorage. The sudden jolt as we came to an abrupt halt, knocked me off my feet and I catapulted into the cockpit, skinning the top of my left first finger as I went. Always the same with accidents, they happen so quickly and are a result of a combination of circumstances. Just one of those things that we must all learn from! Sue took charge of finding first aid stuff for me whist the men managed to get the boat to safety. We did anchor and have some brunch but what we’d been looking forward to had been marred. It was nice to sit for a time and watch the wildlife…. trying to distinguish between terns . It seems Arctic and common terns are extremely similar! We eventually made the last few miles to port Ellen by which time it was quite windy. There was a nice pontoon berth awaiting our arrival and we had a roast dinner to cheer us all up!

What I learned today….. many things. Practically speaking I’m going to get a bracket for the iPad and a screen to make it matte so it’s altogether easy to see.
