Wednesday 21 July. Kentallen to Heather island Oban 23 nm

Woke after a really peaceful night. The wind had dropped completely and the water was flat calm. It was pretty low water and as we left the mooring, the chain obviously fell to the bottom but the trot buoy stayed a way away from it . We couldn’t go much backwards due to not much water so drifted over the top of the trot buoy on its rather long rope. I shouted to J to put the engine in neutral ( so that the propeller didn’t catch) . All was well and there was no consequence but there’s always something that happens that is a first! We motored on down Loch Linnhe, past the lovely Ballygowan island and the horrid scar in the poor mountain on the other side where the “super quarry “ is. We went to have a look at Linnhe Marine, which was interesting and an informative exploration. They have six trots of about 20 moorings. All colour coded orange red yellow white blue and green. So next time we ask for s visitors mooring and they say “ red 6” we’ll know what they’re talking about! We went into Dunstaffnage to fill up on fuel and J wanted to go to the chandlers, after which we mosied on down to Oban. We had decided to pick up a mooring behind heather island… which is a lovely situation overlooking Oban and all the busyness, but with the peace and quiet of s remote anchorage. The mooring strop was a strange arrangement which took a bit of sorting. A combination of chain, a separate very long rope and another rope with the trot on. At one point we were attached but at least 20 m away from the buoy 😳. Anyway once sorted we found we were rather near another buoy up our stern. We ignored it and hoped nobody would come and pick it up. They didn’t look well used moorings but there was a big tug type boat on one of the bigger ones and another large sailing boat on another. Highland cattle roamed contentedly on the shore and strings of geese motored on by……….en route to heather island . We looked across to Oban as the sun went down. A string of light against the shoreline. A lovely feeling to to at peaceful anchorage now but only having to go a mile or so across the bay to our tomorrow destination of Oban transit marina . W

What I learned today …… good idea not to have the boat hook attached with a granny knot, so you can’t undo it in a panic…….soooo I learned the quick release rustlers hitch to use😬 instead.
