We got up at 6 as needed to be away 0730 in order to get the tides right, going north through Ulva sound. We needed to be going through on a rising tide since it’s a very shallow passage and lots of rocks! Also though in addition to needing enough water, it also wants to be not rushing through! Complicated! Soooo….. went at 0730. At 6 am the weather was gorgeous and we were so lucky, not a breath of wind to complicate things further. Sorted the lines out, springing the bow so the stern went out first and slipped away gently in reverse . The weather by 730 had clouded over and it was sultry and moody as we picked our way through the narrow channel which was also full of pot buoys and moorings😳. Antares chart on the iPad firmly supported on the binnacle, J made the challenge look easy and we emerged into Loch Tuath. Little wind but enough to sail and it was peaceful on the flat gloomy water. Our plan was to go across the sea of Tiree to Ariginour on Coll. We sailed past the Treshnish isles and as the wind was steady and gentle and we had 4g we were able to do a bit of research en route. We changed our plans mid morning as we were getting pushed back by the tide and the wind wasn’t strong enough to counteract it. And decided to go to Tiree instead!as it turned out…. a really good decision! Tiree has always been on the list, one of the reasons being it is where basking sharks can be seen if the planktons in the right place. Despite the wind being on the nose as usual the tacking angle meant we could basically point straight at our destination and we arrived mid afternoon after having a race with a Moody 42 ( they of course were unaware of the race) . Gott bay is stunning. A huge 5 mile wide bay of pure white sand. The backdrop is very Hebridean. Flat and windswept. With lonely white Crofts along the shoreline. We were expecting to anchor… in the anchorage that said “only anchor here in settled weather”, but what a thrill to espy through the binoculars what looked like visitors moorings. 10 identical yellow can, new looking moorings with red pick up buoys just north of the ferry quay. We were thrilled! And only 3 were taken so we could choose the nearest to the shore. Once attached and sorted, we dinghied ashore to explore. What a lovely place! We found the village Scarinish and in it a VERY well stocked coop. So got some groceries and rowed back to Angelique. The huge ferry came in and we were astonished at the number of vehicles getting in and off. It looks huge from where we are! We then had a lovely evening.. watching the news and tv old soaps as for once we had a signal.
What I learned today…. what an undiscovered jewel Tiree is. Even if we haven’t seen any basking sharks.
