Friday 9 July. Tinkers hole to Bull hole 5 nm

We needed stores and water to replenish, so had decided to go anchor at bull hole which is an anchorage near Fionport . Fionport is the little village where the ferry goes from the mainland of Mull, to Iona. Iona is a really interesting place but we have been before. Having been basically out of contact with the world for 48 hours we also felt the need to find some WiFi in order to do a few things. No wind to speak of so we left mid morning ( last boat to depart) and After checking out beautiful David Balfour bay out ( amazing white sand) motored northwards through the sound of Iona. A very shallow but wide channel . Bull hole is slightly wider and less protected than tinkers, but we like it as an anchorage. It is tidal so we set our anchor and pulled back from it with the tide. At this stage we still had thoughts of going somewhere else later. Once secured we set off in the dinghy for Fionport…. about half s mile south of bull hole. After using the wheels on the dinghy to trundle it up the beach, We had coffee in the waiting room for the cal Mac ferry in order to try and get onto their free WiFi….. no use whatsoever! We then went to get the groceries from the village shop which was only tiny but actually got most of what we needed. Then we lugged all that back to the dinghy, and set about refilling the 4 water tanks from a tap we’d found outside the public toilets 😳Exhausting business getting that all down to the beach! Got it all though….. abandoned idea of internet connection and loaded the dinghy. We launched it just at the moment the ferry came in causing a huge waves onto the beach which soaked us and threatened to swamp our precious load! All this was pretty energy sapping so we decided not to move but stay in bull hole for the night. We tried to book a meal at the pub as we’d been told they had WiFi but they were fully booked. we had to drive about in the dinghy in order to find a place where there was a signal just to use the phone to ask about booking. Such a palaver! Anyway we went back had a drink in “the Keel row” and J managed to do what he needed on the laptop. The evening was lovely. Peaceful with a beautiful sunset and a chicken curry.

What I learned today…….. be more ferry aware! Delay launch!
