Saturday 19 June Troon to Sanda island 50 nm

Today was thankfully good weather for going round the Mull… or at least the first leg. Favourable conditions meant we could stop overnight at Sanda, the only stopover recommended on the way. Before leaving we needed to fill up with fuel . Unfortunately In my enthusiasm ( panic) to tie up the lines on the fuel pontoon I managed to trip on one of the ropes and went a complete pearler, bruising my left hand and bruising & grazing both my knees. Fortunately I was wearing my gloves, thermals and trousers otherwise it could have been more disastrous! Once recovered we set off into a sunshiny day. We hadn’t gone more than 20 minutes… Julian offered a hot drink and …. the gaz has run out☹️! How annoying as we could have changed it before leaving and then not have to worry about finding camping gas in remote places! The sailing and the weather was beautiful. Long tacks southward with 10 knots of breeze. Eventually the breeze ran out and we had to motor . We could see a ship in the distance which didn’t appear to be moving and turned out to be our destination…. Sanda island! As we got nearer it was approaching 7 pm we started to see more and more sea birds on the syrupy sea. Islands like Sanda…., stuck out in the middle of the sea are always big bird colonies. There were puffins, guillemots, gannets and all sorts of seagull! Seals popped up to say hello like little periscopes. We anchored in amongst 4 other boats obviously waiting for the tide the next morning too. The Mull is one of those places you need to go with the tide … We sat in the cockpit and had a lovely evening. Pasties and salad for supper and watched the wild world we were in. We had to be up at 0630 in order to catch the tide so it wasn’t a late night.

What I learned today….. don’t panic about lines or run on pontoons. Take it easy……..Sue x
