Wednesday 9 June. Otter ferry to wreck bay ( Kyles of Bute). 33.5 nm

Woke to misty murky weather, but it had been a peaceful night. The “ disturbing swell” documented in the literature, had not occurred! We set off 11 ish bound for an anchorage in the Kyles of Bute . The weather forecast was for quite strong winds up to 25 kt so we always intended to reef the mainsail. Unfortunately as I was pulling the blue reefing line in it suddenly seemed a lot easier……when it shouldn’t have. It’s never happened before but the rope had somehow untied itself from the boom. We still had the red line reef so put that in instead and as it happened with the wind that ensued we probably needed it. Basically this makes the area of mainsail even smaller.

Once all that was sorted we proceeded out into the main body of Loch Fyne . It was blowing a hooly … 25 kt and choppy with the wind on the nose. The wind coming from the south meant beating down Loch Fyne. Doing 7 knots one minute and then suddenly the wind just switched off and we were motoring! The weather was also fickle.. one minute sun then rain and the feeling that you were sailing through a cloud . Finally the water calmed as we entered the west Kyle of Bute and the wind dropped. It was still, sultry and peaceful and we enjoyed just looking at all the wonderful properties on the shore as we passed by. Finally arrived at the most peaceful anchorage in the south channel of the Burnt isles which are located at the top of where the east Kyle meets the west Kyle. Pretty tiring day so food and sleep !

What I learned today…… Always check the knots in the reefing lines on the boom before starting the “ pulling in “ process…….☹️

  1. Good to see Tighnabruaich, even if in the distance. I have fond memories of staying there a number of times in a large second-floor apartment, up the road from the lifeboat building in the opposite direction to the shops.

    1. It was a bit dreak as we passed by, but the properties looked amazing and what a position. I can imagine it would have been magical. The colours of the green green grass alongside the brightness of the rhododendrons was stunning even though it doesn’t come out on a photo. 😊
