Sunday 9 August . Loch Shel to Stornaway 20 nm

It’s hard to believe the contrast in weather over the last week. The rest of the UK have been seeing mega temperatures but We never expected them up here in the very North of the country! We don’t actually have a thermometer on board it but must have been in the high twenties. the sea was as blue as blue, a mirror image of the huge sky. No wind at all so the flat Surface of the sea looks oily and sparkling. The sea birds which are usually flying high above or skimming the waves, seem to be just enjoying bobbing around on the calm water as if they were ducks on a pond. We saw dolphins lazily diving and doing that cartwheely thing they do when they swim, with their dorsal fin appearing in a curve. All seemingly in slow motion as though the sunshine is making them sleepy. We left Loch Shel after breakfast but no tea or coffee due to lack of gaz. A realisation of how conditioned we all are to having either tea or coffee as a start to the day! As their was no wind, we were motoring the whole time but apart from the slightly noisy engine, it is a very peaceful way to travel on occasion! You can go exactly where you want, at the speed you want and not have to worry about all the things like waves, wind direction and sails for a change. We anchored for lunch in a beautiful remote loch off Loch Erisort. It couldn’t have been more beautiful and peaceful. We radioed the harbour master at Stornaway, just to check about availability of berths, and were pleased to be told it would be no problem. Stornaway is the only “ proper “ marina in the outer Hebrides and we wondered if it would be very busy. Chugging up the final bit of the Loch to our destination was quite significant. Not only was it the final day of having our lovely friends with us, but also it is the most northerly point of our trip. A milestone achieved! From here we will cross back across “the Minch” to the mainland and then head south. We were really sad that Sue and Tim had to go home tomorrow but glad that despite the difficulties surrounding their outward journey , we had all had a really memorable few days together. Such fun! We had a fantastic meal out at “the boat shed” just up on the Front above the marina. Lovely seafood ….including massive plates of langoustines. Apparently there are no mussels Available atm as they’ve all got the algae!!?????Stornaway marina is wonderful with all facilities open and functioning! In fact I am writing this watching my washing in the washer and tumble dryer go round!

What I have learned today …….how lovely it is, just to feel the the sun on your face.

Sue x
