Saturday 1 August Lochboidale to Castle bay Barra 30 nM

Wind had dropped considerably from our arrival and though it was flat water in the bay we put a reef in ( the blue one) so I assumed Julian probably thought it wouldn’t be so benign once we got out there! Correct! As we were going South but the wind was from the south that means sailing into the wind which you can’t do. So…… you go at the smallest angle to the wind that you can which is called beating. The tide in the other hand is with us …..,that means we at least have tide in our favour. The problem is that that means the wind is going in one direction and the tide is going in the other. This creates the most uncomfortable sailing conditions…. a motion of the boat that is just unpleasant and can really make you feel poorly if prone to seasickness. I haven’t been for ages but My brain still recognises that motion as “not much fun”! Tacking also means it takes longer to get there as you have to zig zag towards your destination. At leSt the visibility was grand and we arrived in Castle bay about 3 pm having set out at 9 ish. Our arrival was pretty good but we narrowly missed taking out the electricity Bollard with our anchor due to the pontoons being very short and me miscalculating when to tie off of my midships line😳. J went up and found the harbour master Who told us all about everything. No facilities open due not the COVID but due to electrical problems! Good news that the coop stays open till 10 and on the way to it we found a little fish an chip van only 5 mins away! Did a load of shopping and then got fish and chips for supper. For once we ordered the right amount! Although there is no WiFi here we do have a good phone signal and the Tv worked! We have an aerial at the top of the mast so it works well but only in random places. Watched “ great canal journeys “ which was really interesting and watching telly when your so far from home is very comforting and normalising.

What I learned today………..,,…..It wasn’t a pipet! By majority feedback it was probably a juvenile wagtail ! Thanks everyone 😊
